The next stage of work on the “Safe Vistula” action program.

Work is currently underway on the retention action program, which is part of flood risk management in the Upper Western Vistula and Upper Eastern Vistula water region between Kraków and Zawichost.

The main objective of the “Safe Vistula – towards a sustainable future” program is to increase flood protection within the so-called Vistula Sandomierska, from the mouth of the Nida River to the mouth of the San River. The initial assumptions were presented during a conference in Sandomierz on May 14 this year.

The program aims to enhance residents’ safety against flood risks while maintaining the highest ecological standards, not only in hydrotechnical infrastructure but also in its surroundings. It includes a comprehensive set of actions focused on increasing natural retention (restoring oxbow lakes, wetlands, and marshes, as well as drainage ditches and afforestation) and constructing polders, with a total potential retention capacity of approximately 230 million m³.

The solutions recommended by Wody Polskie will undergo public consultations at the end of this year. Only after the consultations are completed will the final program of proposed actions be developed, taking into account the feedback from both local government representatives and the community. The final results will be presented at the beginning of 2025.
